Original Texas Power Bar

The Bar That Built The Sport

45 lbs • 28.5mm Shaft • 190k PSI • Trusted Since 1980

The most iconic powerlifting barbell of all time. Created in 1980 by powerlifter Buddy Capps, the Original Texas Power Bar is the revolutionary bar that set the industry standard—and continues to define it today. Known for its aggressive knurling, unyielding durability, and perfect whip, this is the exact bar design used to set decades of world records before "specialty bars" even existed.

Handbuilt in Texas from a 45 lbs, 28.5mm diameter shaft forged with 190,000 PSI tensile strength steel, this bar delivers the specific feel that built the sport of powerlifting. Proudly carrying Buddy Capps’ stamp of approval, this is the original Texas Power Bar—not a copy. If you want to know what real powerlifting feels like, this is the bar.

The 190k PSI "Sweet Spot"

The classic 28.5mm shaft diameter offers the perfect balance for all three lifts: unyielding rigidity for heavy squats, and just enough "play" (flex) for massive deadlifts. Strong enough for world records, but with the classic, raw feel that has survived 40+ years of abuse in hardcore gyms worldwide.

Chasing Competition Specs? Why Lifters Upgrade to the PRO:

While the Original is the definitive 1980 classic, modern platform requirements led to the development of the PRO tier. Lifters step up to the PRO model to unlock clear performance upgrades:

  • Stiffer 29mm Shaft: Upgrades the classic 28.5mm baseline to an ultra-rigid 29mm diameter with 200,000+ PSI steel for zero bar whip under heavy loads.
  • Sanctioned Competition Approval: Thins down the traditional wide collar profile to fit full modern meet dimensions, making it fully USPA and IPL approved.
  • Extended Sleeve Length: Increases loadable space to a massive 16 inches, allowing you to pack on maximum calibrated plates.
  • Knurl Variety: Introduces multiple knurling choices (Aggressive or Medium) to protect your hands during high-volume daily training cycles.

Why Powerlifters Choose The Original

  • ✓ The Original Texas Knurl: The specific, sharp mountain-style cut that defined what a power bar feels like. Often imitated, never replicated.
  • ✓ Proven Since 1980: No guesswork. This bar has been trusted by commercial gyms, high schools, universities, and powerlifting clubs for over four decades.
  • ✓ The 28.5mm Standard: The traditional shaft diameter that provides maximum grip security and the legendary "Texas Flex" off the floor.
  • ✓ Competition Proven: IPF specification compliant and trusted on platforms across the globe.
  • ✓ Built to Last: Featuring maintenance-free bronze bushings and American steel designed to perform reliably, consistently, and without compromise.

Understanding Barbell Finishes

Bare Steel: Delivers the maximum raw grip feel and sharpest knurl bite. Preferred by purists who want direct feedback, though it requires regular oiling to prevent natural oxidation.

Chrome: A classic, bright finish providing long-term durability and lower maintenance, while preserving the aggressive knurl definition.

Black Zinc: Features a sleek dark coating with added corrosion resistance, making it highly effective in humid garage gym environments.

Cerakote: An advanced ceramic-polymer armor offering the ultimate defense against rust and sweat. It allows for bold custom colors while being applied microscopically thin to maintain the legendary Texas Power Bar bite.

Frequently Asked Questions — Original Texas Power Bar

1. Why choose the 28.5mm Original vs. the 29mm PRO (7th Gen)?

The Original 28.5mm shaft offers a slightly thinner grip, which many lifters prefer for deadlifting and general strength training. The PRO 29mm is stiffer and designed specifically for modern squat and bench press rigidity.

2. Does this bar have any "whip"?

Because of the 28.5mm shaft, this bar has a slight amount of flex compared to our 29mm bars. This can be beneficial for pulling heavy deadlifts without being as flexible as a dedicated deadlift bar.

3. Is the knurling really that aggressive?

Yes. The Original Texas Power Bar is famous for its "mountain" style knurling. It is sharp and provides a deep bite for maximum security. It is not recommended for lifters who prefer soft or passive knurling.

4. How do I maintain the Bare Steel finish?

Bare Steel offers the best raw grip but will rust if not cared for. We recommend brushing the bar with a nylon or brass brush and applying a light coat of 3-in-1 oil regularly to keep it in top condition.

5. Will the 15" sleeves fit all my plates?

15" is the classic standard and fits plenty of weight for most lifters. However, if you are using wide bumper plates or lifting over 700 lbs with calibrated plates, you might prefer the longer 16" sleeves on the PRO (7th Gen) or ELITE (8th Gen) models.
